Argentine composer María Elena Walsh’s 1962 “Manuelita La Tortuga” for #sheetmusicsunday .

Maybe the most popular of Walsh’s many children’s songs, the lyrics tell the story of Manuelita the turtle who falls in love, goes to Paris to iron out her wrinkles and become beautiful, only to take so long returning that she is wrinkled again when she returns to her faithful tortoise.

Excerpt from Lou Harrison’s 1978 Serenade for guitar (transcribed by David Tanenbaum) for #sheetmusicsunday , performed with the birds outside on a clacking-more-by-the-day Wurlitzer. I don’t know if it’s more common in string music to be in free time like this (enlighten me!) but I gave it my best shot playing without measures.

Harrison has a fascinating body of work, including pieces in Esperanto and works for gamelan– well worth a lookup.
